FMIS Students Recognized in Global Writing Competition
Two students at Fakhir Mergasori International School (FMIS), a SABIS® PPP school in Kurdistan, were recently recognized for their entries in the Trust for Sustainable Living (TSL) 2017 International Schools Essay Competition and Debate, a global competition in which students submit English essays addressing the issue of climate change.
Roz Hussein (Grade 7), Aween Muhammad (Grade 10), and their classmates in grades 7 through 10 at FMIS participated in the 2017 competition as a way to put the knowledge and skills they had acquired to work. Each student submitted an essay of approximately 600 words about how they would combat global warming before 2030. In addition to providing an opportunity to showcase their English fluency, the essay also gave students the opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking skills by tackling global warming as an emerging problem.
In the end, the competition garnered 1,229 entries from students living in77 countries around the world, and Roz and Aween’s essays were singled out. Roz received honorable mention and Aween was named among the contest’s finalists. “I am very proud of myself for having come this far. I have learned so much about climate change,” said Aween.
All participating students are invited to attend the awards ceremony on July 3-7 in Oxford, U.K., where grand prizes will be awarded to the top five essay winners. To visit the gallery of the event, please click here.
